Early 2023, Women UMKM Activists at Tokopedia Increase 30%
Welcoming World Women’s Day which falls on March 8 2023, Tokopedia revealed a trend related to female MSME activists at Tokopedia, which experienced a significant increase earlier this year.
Through a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (06/03/2023), it was revealed that there were around 12 million sellers who joined Tokopedia and almost 100% of the business actors who joined were driven by women.
“Tokopedia notes the high interest of women in starting and developing online businesses,” said Head of Tokopedia’s Public Relations Division, Rizky Juanita Azuz.
Aware of the potential for women to become entrepreneurs, Tokopedia also provides various programs that support their business development.

For example, the Proudly Made in Indonesia program, which is a special widget containing products from Indonesian MSMEs. Then there is Women In Style which provides a variety of women’s fashion products and Cantik Fest which contains various beauty, personal care, household and so on products.
Next, there are Selected Store Collections and Tokcer, where Tokopedia users will get curated products and promos from their closest sellers.
“Seeing the challenges and potential of female MSME practitioners, Tokopedia continues to strive to provide more stages through Proud Made in Indonesia, Women In Style, Cantik Fest and Fast and Efficient Shops (Tokcer). For Tokcer, we use geo-tagging technology so that we are able to curate products and promos from the nearest sellers,” continued Rizky.
These programs are bearing fruit. LPEM FEB UI 2020 research also revealed that the number of female entrepreneurs who started a business from scratch through Tokopedia during the pandemic was almost 1.5 times higher than men.
Furthermore, when compared between March 2020 and March 2023, there was an increase in the number of female MSME activists at Tokopedia by almost 30%.
Some of the areas with the highest increase in the number of female salespeople were Denpasar, Badung, Balikpapan, Makassar and Palembang, with an average increase of more than 3 times.
“Tokopedia recorded an increase in the number of female salespeople reaching almost 30% in early 2023 compared to the same period before the pandemic in March 2020,” said Rizky.

The program will continue, and Tokopedia hopes that female MSME activists can compete with male MSME players and other entrepreneurs.
“Tokopedia is carrying out various other initiatives to empower women who are SMEs so that they become more and more dominant in their own country,” concluded Rizky. [NM/HBS]
