10 Types of Operating Systems Commonly Used on Computers
Personal Computer (PCs) and laptops cannot be separated from an operating system in them. The operating system itself is software that contains programs to control existing systems on computer devices.

There are several operating systems released by a number of different companies. This time, the Caris Signal team has summarized several operating systems that are commonly used personal computer. Here is the list.
1. Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows or Windows is a fairly popular operating system. This operating system dominates computer software around the world. Windows itself is an operating system developed by Microsoft. Windows is based on a graphical user interface (graphical user interface).
Since its first release, Windows is quite popular. One of them thanks to the presence of applications made by Microsoft. Call it like Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Until now, Microsoft has indeed released several newer versions of Windows that are more complete and have modern features.
The first Windows version available on the market was Windows 1.0. This operating system was released on November 20, 1985. Over time, Windows has grown to become the most popular operating system in the world. At the time of writing this article, the most recent major version of Windows is Windows 11.
Microsoft has also announced a computer-based services program cloud named Windows 365. You can access it for free cross-platform. This means that this service can be used on devices such as Android and iOS phones.
Windows 365 is based web browserso users don’t need to install any apps from Google Play Store or App Store to be able to use it.
2. Mac OS
Mac OS Operating System or Macintosh Operating System is the first operating system based Graphical User Interface or GUI, which was released by Apple Computer in 1984. Apple itself is a computer equipment company that has very advanced and exclusive technology at the beginning of its appearance.
The Mac OS operating system is specifically used for Apple hardware. Overall, Mac OS is different from other operating systems. Mac OS does not have a command line like its competing operating systems.
Mac OS is also an operating system that introduces a hierarchical file system (hierarchical file system) like Linux.
3. Chrome OS
Chrome OS is a relatively new operating system. Chrome OS was released in the mid 2000’s. Linux is base of this operating system. Chrome OS works by relying on web apps.
Operating system made by Google Inc. it can only run on hardware specifically designed by Google’s company: Chromebooks. The device was also launched by several well-known brands. Call it like Dell, ASUS, and Acer.
Using the Chrome OS operating system is quite easy. In addition, Chrome OS is also integrated with Google services. Call it like Google Drive, and Google Docs.
Chromebooks with Chrome OS are suitable for use by students, or workers who do light tasks. Chromebook prices are also usually more affordable than computer/laptop devices in general.
4. UNIX
UNIX is an operating system developed in 1965 with the initial project called Multiplexed Information and Computing Service (Multics). In the 1970s, the UNIX operating system was reworked using the C programming language by Dennis Ritchie.
The UNIX operating system was later developed by the AT&T Bell Laboratories company. Since then, there has been a commercial UNIX operating system under the name UNIX System V.
The UNIX operating system is commonly used to run computer networks. Just like MS-DOS, UNIX was originally a proprietary operating system command line interface. Finally, UNIX was versioned Graphical User Interface or GUI to facilitate the users.
5. Linux
Linux is a more complete development of the UNIX operating system. Linux itself is open source, where user can freely develop or duplicate programs with the official license from GNU (GNU Not UNIX).
